About this drawing

A boxer puppy is pure energy. The breed was developed in Germany in the late 1800s and quickly earned a reputation as a cheerful, brave dog that is wonderful with kids. Its short muzzle, wrinkled forehead and expressive eyes make it easy to recognize.

One popular explanation for the name comes from the way these dogs play. When boxers get excited, they often stand on their hind legs and bat at the air with their front paws, as if they were boxing. It is a goofy habit that sticks with them long after puppyhood.

Boxers are athletic, muscular dogs that need plenty of exercise. They love running, chasing balls and roughhousing with their families, and they get bored if left alone for too long. Because of their short snouts, they do not handle heat well, so summer walks are best early in the morning or in the evening.

Along with all that energy comes deep loyalty. Boxers tend to be protective of their families and total clowns at home, always ready to make someone laugh. Many owners say a boxer stays a puppy at heart for years.
