About this drawing

A dachshund puppy has an unforgettable shape: a long body, short legs and floppy ears. That funny silhouette is no accident. It is the result of centuries of breeding in Germany to create a dog that could squeeze into burrows.

The name dachshund literally means badger dog in German. Hunters used these brave little dogs to track badgers and other animals that hide underground. A narrow body let them wriggle through tunnels, and strong front legs helped them dig fast. Their surprisingly loud bark told hunters exactly where they were.

In the United States, many people lovingly call them wiener dogs or doxies. They come in three coat types, smooth, wirehaired and longhaired, and in standard and miniature sizes, so no two dachshunds look exactly alike.

Very few dachshunds hunt today, but they keep that bold, curious and slightly stubborn personality. They love sniffing, digging in the yard and staying close to their people, which is why they rank among America's favorite family dogs. If you share your home with a dachshund, give it chew toys and hide treats around the house so it can sniff them out. That turns its hunting instinct into a fun game and keeps the backyard from turning into a maze of holes.
