On this sheet

A boy and a girl in caps putting trash in sacks, cans and wrappers on the grass, a bench, trees, a pond with a duck and planet Earth behind them.

Coloring tip

Make the planet's oceans bright blue and the continents green so Earth pops behind the park.

Activity idea

Plan a mini cleanup in the schoolyard or a local park with gloves and a bag for each helper.

Did you know?

Many national parks ask visitors to follow a Leave No Trace rule and pack out every bit of trash they bring in.

About this drawing

Kids picking up litter can turn a messy park back into a place where ducks swim and families picnic. Every can or bottle they grab is one less piece of trash that could wash into a stream, tangle a bird or drift out to sea.

A simple way to remember how to help is the phrase reduce, reuse, recycle. Reducing means using fewer throwaway things like plastic bags and straws. Reusing means finding a second job for what you already have, like turning a jar into a pencil holder. Recycling means sorting materials so they can be made into something new.

Recycling rules change from town to town in the United States, so it helps to check what your local bins accept. Many communities also hold cleanup days around Earth Day in April, when neighbors, scouts and school groups spend a morning clearing parks, beaches and riverbanks together.

Use this page to ask kids who they think left the trash behind, how a dirty park makes them feel and what small changes at home or school could mean less litter every week.
