About this drawing

A triceratops and volcano together make a great picture of the end of the dinosaur age. Triceratops lived about 66 million years ago, in a part of North America that is now states like Wyoming and Montana. It was one of the very last big dinosaurs.

The world looked different back then. It was warmer, and there were ferns, palm-like plants and early flowering trees. Triceratops spent its days munching low plants. It had a strong beak, a lot like a parrot's, that could snip tough stems.

Earth was busy under the ground, too. Far away in India, giant volcanoes erupted again and again for a very long time. They left thick layers of old lava that people can still see today. All that smoke and gas slowly changed the air.

Then a huge asteroid hit Earth near what is now Mexico. After that, the big dinosaurs were gone. But here's the amazing part: not all of the dinosaur family went away. Birds came from dinosaurs! So when you see a robin hopping across your yard, you are looking at a tiny living relative of the dinosaurs. Pretty cool, right?
