Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston, an American psychologist.
Wonder Woman with shield in hand is a warrior who has trained since childhood. Her real name is Diana, and she is an Amazon princess, daughter of Queen Hippolyta, ruler of Themyscira, a hidden island where only women warriors live.
The Amazons come from Greek mythology. In ancient legends, they were a people of brave women skilled with weapons who fought on horseback with bows. DC Comics took that idea and created a paradise island, hidden from the outside world, where the Amazons live in peace and train to protect their home.
On the island, Diana grew up among the finest fighters. She learned to use the sword, the shield and the lasso and became the strongest of them all. In many versions of her story, the gods of Olympus also gave her special gifts, like incredible speed and strength.
One day an American pilot crashed near the island, and Diana chose to go with him into the world of humans to help end a war. That is how Wonder Woman was born, a hero who stands for peace, truth and justice.
