About this drawing

A wreath with jingle bells is one of the happiest decorations of the season. Bells have been part of Christmas for centuries, and their sound has long meant that good news is on its way.

In many countries, churches ring their bells late on Christmas Eve to call people to midnight services celebrating the birth of Jesus. In Spain, that late-night service is known as the Misa del Gallo, the Mass of the Rooster.

Bells also jingle their way through many holiday songs. In the United States, Jingle Bells is one of the most familiar tunes of the season, though it was first written as a winter sleigh-ride song rather than a Christmas carol. Small bells on horse harnesses helped others hear a sleigh coming over quiet snow.

Bells mark the end of the year too: in Spain, the twelve chimes at midnight on New Year's Eve signal the moment to eat twelve grapes. So a wreath with bells on the door feels like an invitation to celebrate with music. Many families also hang little bells on the tree or the front door, because their cheerful jingle has become a sound of the season.
