About this drawing

A bulldog with a bandana like this one looks like it is posing for a photo with its big softie face. Dogs cannot talk, but they are always telling us how they feel. We just have to learn to read their body language: ears, eyes, mouth, tail and posture.

A relaxed dog has a slightly open mouth, a loose body and a tail held naturally, wagging gently. A happy, playful dog may wiggle its whole rear end, bounce around or drop into a play bow. Watch out, though, because a wagging tail does not always mean joy. It can also signal nervousness.

When a dog is scared or uncomfortable, it often flattens its ears, tucks its tail, licks its lips, yawns or looks away. If it growls, freezes or shows its teeth, it is clearly asking us to back off, and we should always respect that.

Learning these signals helps kids stay safe around dogs. Never hug a dog you do not know, and leave dogs alone while they eat or sleep. With bulldogs, those wrinkles can be misleading: sometimes they look serious when they are actually thrilled to see you.
