A golden retriever has a water-repellent undercoat that keeps it warm while swimming.
The golden retriever outdoors in this picture looks right at home, and that makes sense, because the breed was made to spend all day in the countryside. Its story begins in the Scottish Highlands in the mid-1800s, on the estate of a hunting enthusiast known as Lord Tweedmouth.
He wanted a dog that could fetch birds that landed in lakes, rivers and rough ground, so he paired a wavy-coated yellow retriever with a water spaniel. Those litters gave rise to the golden retriever, a strong, eager-to-please dog with a huge love of water.
Its body is built for swimming. A thick double coat protects it from the cold, and its feet even have a bit of webbing between the toes. Plenty of goldens leap into the water the moment they spot a puddle, a creek or a swimming pool, then climb out happy and dripping wet.
Today the golden retriever is one of the most popular family dogs in the United States. It is friendly, patient and loves joining its people on walks, hikes and games of fetch. It needs lots of exercise and frequent brushing to keep that golden coat clean and tangle-free.
