The Minecraft horse is a favorite ride for explorers. Herds roam plains and savannas in different colors and markings, and every horse has its own speed, jump strength and health.
Taming one takes patience. Climb on with an empty hand and the horse will buck you off a few times, until hearts suddenly float around it and it is yours. Feeding it apples, sugar or wheat helps it trust you faster.
After taming, you need a saddle to steer. Saddled up, a horse gallops far faster than a player can run and leaps over fences and ledges. Careful riders add horse armor to protect it from mobs.
The game also has donkeys and mules, which can carry a chest full of supplies. And just like real horses, Minecraft horses can be bred in pairs, with each foal inheriting a mix of its parents' stats. One of the strangest variants is the skeleton horse, which can appear when lightning strikes during a thunderstorm. Saddles cannot be crafted, either, so players usually find them in chests in villages, dungeons and other structures, or by fishing. Finding one early makes exploring much faster.
