About this drawing

A Minecraft hippo is a fan creation, since the game has no hippos. Blocky rivers and swamps have frogs and fish, and axolotls hide in lush caves, but this heavyweight only appears in drawings and builds.

Real hippos live in rivers and lakes in Africa. They spend most of the day in the water to stay cool and protect their skin from the sun, then come ashore at night to graze on grass, sometimes walking miles to find enough.

Their skin gives off a reddish liquid often called blood sweat, though it is neither blood nor sweat. It works like natural sunscreen and helps fight germs. Their eyes, ears and nostrils sit high on their heads, so they can see and breathe while almost completely underwater.

The biggest surprise is their family tree: scientists have found that the hippo's closest living relatives are whales and dolphins. Big, round and with that enormous snout, the hippo looks fantastic turned into blocks. Despite their calm look, hippos are very territorial and can be dangerous, so safari guides always watch them from a safe distance. Respect is the rule.
