List rules that help dogs and neighbors get along in your neighborhood.
Many American cities have fenced dog parks where dogs can play off leash.
A happy city dog can have just as great a life as a country dog, as long as its family gives it what it needs: daily walks, playtime and lots of love. The pup in this picture, wearing a bandana, is enjoying a park surrounded by buildings, one of its favorite spots in the neighborhood.
City life also means being a good neighbor. The most important rule is to always pick up after your dog with a bag and toss it in a trash can. Thoughtful owners also keep their dogs off neighbors' flower beds and make sure they do not block busy sidewalks.
In most cities, dogs must stay on a leash outside and can only run free in designated areas like fenced dog parks. There they can sprint and play with other dogs without bothering anyone. It also helps to keep a dog from barking for hours when it is home alone, since neighbors can hear it.
City dogs get used to traffic, elevators and noise when they meet them gradually as puppies. With training and good habits, dogs and people can share streets, parks and outdoor cafes, and the whole neighborhood becomes a friendlier place.
