About this drawing

A Minecraft whale is a fan invention, because the game's oceans have no whales. Dolphins, squid, turtles and the fierce guardians that protect ocean monuments all swim there, but whales only show up in player builds and drawings.

Real whales are mammals, not fish. They breathe air, so they surface to inhale through a blowhole on top of their heads. When they breathe out, they send up the famous misty spout that whale watchers look for from boats.

There are two main groups. Baleen whales, like blue whales and humpbacks, filter seawater to catch tiny shrimp-like krill. Toothed whales, like sperm whales, hunt squid and fish. Many travel thousands of miles each year between feeding and breeding waters.

Calves are born underwater and drink their mother's milk, just like other mammals. Big, calm and easy to recognize by that tail, the whale fits Minecraft's simple, blocky style perfectly. Some whale species were nearly wiped out by hunting in the past, and international protections have helped many populations slowly recover. Today, whale watching trips let people see these giants up close without harming them.
