Did you know?

The 2023 mob vote was a three-way race between the crab, the armadillo and the penguin.

About this drawing

The Minecraft crab has a fun backstory: it came close to joining the game. For several years, the Minecraft Live event featured a mob vote, where the developers showed off new creatures and fans picked which one would be added.

In 2023 the crab was one of the candidates. Its big idea was clever: collect a crab claw and you could place and break blocks from farther away, a handy trick for builders. In the end, though, the armadillo won, and its scutes are used to craft armor for wolves.

Crab fans never forgot the little guy, so it keeps popping up in fan art, builds and community mods. With its stalk eyes and giant pincers, it fits the game's blocky look perfectly.

Real crabs are crustaceans with a hard shell and ten legs, counting the claws. Many scuttle sideways and live on beaches, rocky shores and the seafloor. This blocky one is a playful mix of ocean life and Minecraft. For such a simple design, the blocky crab is a nice reminder that community ideas always find a way to live on, whether in fan art, custom maps or classroom drawings.
